In June, the California Independent System Operator (ISO) connected to the nation’s largest battery storage in the country, kicking off a project that aims to drastically increase the grid’s storage capacity by the end of 2020.

According to the CAISO press release, LS Power Group’s Gateway Energy Storage Project in San Diego County could increase the grid’s storage capacity from 136 MW to 923 MW by year-end. The Gateway Project, a lithium-ion battery system, has added 62.5 MW of storage since June, qualifying it as the largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the country. By August, when the storage capacity will have reached 250 MW, it will the largest BESS in the world.

“We are at a turning point for storage on our system,” said Steve Berberich, CAISO president and CEO. “With some of these large-capacity projects coming online, 2020 will be the transition year for battery storage to play a critical role in integrating renewables in the future.”

Additional battery storage projects are being planned for ISO over the next few years, as well as for other parts of the country.
